@@Nanni Moretti, who also directed and co-wrote the film, stars as a Giovanni, psychiatrist living an idyllic life in an Italian seaside town with his wife and his two intelligent children. They are a comfortable and close-knit family, but suddenly their tranquility is shattered when son Andrea is killed in a freak diving accident. Unable to properly treat patients, Giovanni quits practicing and his wife withdraws into herself. Also affected by grief, his daughter begins to have trouble with her performance in school. When the family discovers a letter sent to Andrea by an unknown girl, they arrange to meet her in the hope that they can heal.
