The 1960s was such a turbulent and confusing time that no exercise in renegotiating it is moot. Four days in september is based on a real incident in 1969, shortly after the military government of Brazil banned freedom of the press and civil rights. A group of idealists abducts the American Ambassador to demand the release of political prisoners. The film deals even-handedly with the situation, giving all sides their due. Everyone involved emerges as a flesh-and-blood human being, from the young terrorists to the kidnapped ambassador to even the secret police.
