England 1908: everything is in a mess in the swank aristocratic Ivory family. Emily (Georgina Cates) is young woman desperate to fulfill her growing sexual curiosity. She is matched for marriage with Cedric (Robert Portal) by her Aunt Agnes (prunella Scales). However, Cedric, a poetry reading classicist, is himself recognizing his mounting passion for Edward (Samuel Weat), Emily's little brother ?? One day, estate rabbit-catcher George (Sean Pertwee) saves Emily from drowning, and is invited to join in a grand tour of Italy and India as a servant of the family. One night in Italy, George is seduced by Emily, but come daybreak they must face the class difference between them. In India, Aunt Agnes is wooed by a mad English plantation owner (peter Ustinov). Emily finds herself pregnant and runs away. Cedric fetches her back, convincing Emily to accept Cedric's proposal. Then George is accused of arson and is sent to jail. However, it is not until the wedding day that all is revealed ??
