Four decades ago, teen girl Harriet Vangaer vanished mysteriously from a family gathering on the Vanger-owned island. Though her body is never found, her uncle is convinced that it was a murder and that the killer is from his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. Forty years after, he employs the disgraced financial joumalist, Mikael Blomkvist, and the ruthless tattooed hacker, Lisbeth Salander, to investigate this decades-old suspected homicide. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history of the secretive Vanger's clan.
