The time is the early 16th century, when artists need rich patrons in order to survive and create. When the story begins, Michelangelo Buonarroti (Heston), already a famed sculptor, is summoned by Julius (Harrison) and given a new commission. The Pope wants him to paint several panels of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. At first, Michelangelo refuses, protesting that he is a sculptor, not a painter. But Julius is an insistent man who wields great power, and finally Michelangelo is persuaded by an old friend, the Contessina de'Medici(Diane Cilento), to accept the job.
The work does not go smoothly. Michelangelo is hounded by critics who find his work shocking, Pope Julius II does not pay him, and at one point the painter even collapses from exhaustion.
