A demanding, rather depressing but expertly acted and brilliant evocation of William Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Set amongst the squalor of the poor and alcoholic street bums living in late-1930s Albany. The film features two mesmerizing performances by Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep as two part-time lovers living on the skids; each concealing a secret from their past. Though it is certainly downbeat, the tour de force portrayals from Jack and Meryl make it a fascinating experience.
