Temple Rayburn is a lawyer in the Maitland Town. Spencer Maitland, one of the richest in town , assists him to take part in the election for the Senate. Meanwhile, Rayburn's balck servant died, leaving her only son, Ben, in Rayburn's. The Rayburns showed sympathy towards the slightly mentally handicapped Ben, but it broght the despise of the community. Spencer even made Ben be drafted in the army so as to remove this obstacle in the way of the election.

In one stormy night, Spencer's son knocked an old black woman dead after drinking. A witness called the police but he denied his guilt. Temple was asked to be his defensive lawyer but then discovered the truth. So.......

After a series of difficulties, the Rayburns came to know the virtues and loyalty of the slow Ben.
