Cathay Organisation first landed in Hong Kong in 1953 to set up International Films, both a distribution and a production company. They initially produced Cantonese films and hired renowned Cantonese filmmaker Zuo Ji (Tso Kea) to direct a series of Cantonese productions for them. Zuo, known for his meticulous style and serious attitude, made some of the best films of his career with the full support of International, of which The Splendor of Youth is undoubtedly one. Adapted from the popular novel by Zheng Hui (who also wrote Our Sister Hedy) and set against the world of the upper class socialites, the film tells how the life of a beautiful schoolgirl is almost ruined by a villainous playboy. The film featured an ensemble cast and the shoot lasted almost twelve months, something almost unprecedented in the Cantonese cinema of the time.
