The story is about a widower?s journey to the hometown of his late wife. He encounters strangers and their stories, guided by his wife?s true wishes. Eiji Kurashima (Ken Takakura) is a technical instructor at a prison in northwestern Japan. His wife Yoko (Yuko Tanaka) has recently died, leaving him two letters. The first requesting her ashes to be scattered in Hirado, the small Kyushu port in which she was raised, whilst the second details correspondence to be scattered in Hirado, the small Kyushu port in which she was raised, whilst the second details correspondence to be collected at the town?s post office. With no mention of her wishes whilst she was alive, Eiji is puzzled by his wife?s request. Nevertheless, he loads up his van and heads off to Hirado. Encountering various individuals on the way, he listens to their stories and relating to their struggles recalls his own poignant memories of his life with Yoko. Finally reaching Hirado, he scatters his wife?s ashes. And as he does so, Eiji realises what his true love wanted to convey to him?
