Director Qi Jian's The Forest Ranger presented a forceful criticism of corruption in China's rural area in the midst of accelerated economic development. The movie begins with a terrible murder in which three brothers, who have been regarded as the role model in a rural village, are shot to death by a ranger named Li. A policeman assigned to investigate the case finally surfaces the three brothers' evil acts. They have made a fortune from illegal wood-cutting in the national park. When ranger Li arrives to watch over the forest and guard against their illegal activities, the three brothers unscrupulously torture Li's wife and son, and almost bully Li to death... The movie received the Jury Grand Prix at the Jin Jue Awards, presented at the Shanghai International Film Festival 2006.
