Duration: 99mins Contents: In this film Ge You plays a proto-incel sadboy who seemingly can? interact normally with other human beings. Our protagonist can only communicate through cynical jabs at and mean spirited criticism of those around him. Every other character acts as a naive receptacle for his 4chan circa 2008 stylings of bro philosophy. As the film progresses, it becomes clear that he also has magical powers: every pessimistic pronouncement he makes will cause the film itself to contort its narrative so that his poorly conceived opinion will be validated. As we enter the final stretch of the film, it seems almost inconceivable that the film could end with anything other than a grand refutation of our protagonist? worldview. However, in a moment of stunning kitsch for an otherwise deeply cynical film, we end on yet another affirmation of this gross ideology, this time through a scene so tacky as to almost be parodic. Formally the modernists of the 5th Generation were never as accomplished as Tian Zhuangzhuang and Chen Kaige, but Xia? work here is disappointing. This is not the distinctive, spatially aware filmmaking of Feng Xiaogang or the tonally precise cinema of Huang Jianxin, ?fter Separation?is generic Beijing cinema encapsulated. Camera angles, editing choices are almost arbitrary; at moments I? almost call the film lazy. This film is either a shallow, misanthropic reddit post adapted for the screen or a brilliant metafilm intended to expose how much Xia Gang's other work sucks.
