Dumped by girlfriend beaten up by agent and evicted from his apartment, actor Marty(Lochlyn Munro) life couldn't get much worse. He hires private detcetive Jack Potter (Leslie Nielsen) to sue his agent, but for Jack it's cash up front or case dismissed. Reluctantly, Jack sends him on a routine case to Oregon to spy on a blond for a jealous husband. When Marty inadvertently hears a murder committed, he is catapulted right into the center of the town's seething weirdness. Beaver Ridge's hostile sheriff Alton Owens (William Forsythe) seems more interested in running Marty out of town that investigation the murder, but for Marty private investigator is his best role yet and he's determined to break his lifetime losing streak and solve the case. Fleeing from a wannabe lounge singer in a hillbilly outpost near Beaver Ridge, Mary and Jack stumble upon a nuclear testing site and start making sense of various bizarre happenings.
