Kawano Shuko, staff of Tokyo's Union Theatre, comes to Matsuo Village in Iwate Province hoping to join hands with the local youth association to put on a musical, Hometown. Instead of making profits, the Theatre aims only at sharing a joyful night with the youngsters in the village. Although Shuko earns the support from Sato Takashi, president of the youth association, huge costs result in fierce opposition from other members. They finally consent to stage the musical when Takashi promises to cover the deficit, but Takashi and Shuko still have to overcome such other problems as unsatisfactory box office performance and absence of suitable venue before they can have their dream come trueK An early and rarely seen masterpiece by the director of the Tora-san series and the majestic The Twilight Samurai, The Village is also one of the filmmaker's most cherished films.
