Marie (Charlotte Rampling) and Jean (Bruno Cremer) are a married couple, set in the rhythms of a life spent together. As they begin their regular holiday at their country house, nothing seems amiss. One day at the beach, Marie naps in the sand while Jean goes for a swim. When she awakes, she cannot find him. Frantic, she rushes to the lifeguards and the local ploice, who are all unable to locate him.
Her continued grief is intensified when Jean's mother blames Marie for his disappearance, insisting that Jean didn't drown, but rather ran away from his unhappy life with Maarie. Then one day, the French authorities confront her with apparent evidence of Jean's death...
